Heather explains that, in Buddhist thought, things are as they are because of a multitude of interdependent conditions—everything is caused by everything else. She clarifies that allowing or accepting life as it happens is not the same as foregoing all discernment; instead, we are encouraged to understand and accept what is happening so we can act from a place of clarity and wisdom. Heather ends the talk by discussing the pros and cons of each of the three modes of meditation: heartening, concentration and Vipassana practice.

Drawing on personal experience, images, and the history of the Buddha, Heather explores concentration practice. She shares how her early experiences of meditation were infused with a sense of striving and a need to dominate her thoughts. Over time, Heather has come to see the connection between delight and a more collected, relaxed and concentrated mind. Heather suggests that when the mind is encouraged and unified, insight is more possible. With time and practise, we are able to observe the stories that unfold in our mind and watch our reactions without getting pulled into the drama of our thoughts. Through meditation we see that we create our own states of happiness or distress through our reaction and relationship to our thoughts.

In this talk, the first of three given at a retreat in Edmonton, Heather discusses how our perspective creates our relationship to the world. Typically, our minds are taken up with attempts to manipulate our external circumstances in an effort to maintain a stable happiness. This approach, while not wrong, is ultimately ineffective. As an alternative, Heather suggests that through meditation we can develop an ability to ‘zoom out’; to cultivate a more expansive view that releases us from our relentless self concerns. Heather also introduces three modes of meditation practiced by the Buddha, paying particular attention to the importance of gladdening our hearts and of knowing what inspires us to practise.
